I used to be the guy in the finance office.
I spent over 15 years in Ontario's car business. I started on the sales floor in the GTA, then moved into the finance and insurance office, the F&I desk, where car deals actually get made. Over those years I sat across from thousands of buyers: bruised credit, bankruptcies, consumer proposals, new-to-Canada files, and a lot of "I just need a car to get to work."
I learned the levers from the inside. How interest-rate markup, called reserve, actually works. How warranties and protection packages get folded into a monthly payment. How subprime lenders really decide who gets a yes. And why two people with the same credit score can walk out of the same dealership with wildly different deals.
Why I left the desk
I got tired of watching good people overpay, not because anyone lied to them, but because nobody explained the game. The system isn't rigged against you; it's just not explained to you. Once you understand the levers, you hold them.
So I stepped out from behind the desk and built the resource I wished my customers had walked in with: an Ontario-specific, plain-English guide to getting approved and getting a fair deal at the same time.
What I believe
- Approval is a number problem, not a moral one. Bad credit is a data point lenders price, and you can improve your price.
- Your interest rate is often negotiable, and often marked up. Knowing that changes the conversation.
- The payment is the distraction; the total cost is the truth.
- A car loan can rebuild your credit if it's structured right and reports to the bureaus.
- Say no to add-ons you don't understand.
- Everyone deserves a straight answer: newcomer, bankrupt, self-employed, on ODSP. No judgment, just the path.
How this site makes money (the honest version)
Tim's take: I still work with a network of Ontario lenders and reputable dealers. When you use a pre-qualification tool or referral here, they may pay us. That's how the lights stay on, and you deserve to know it. The rule that makes it work: you get the truth first, the referral second. If the honest answer is "wait six months and rebuild your credit," that's the answer you'll get.
Nothing on this site is personalized financial or legal advice. I cite my sources, I label estimates as estimates, and I publish rate ranges rather than pretending anyone can promise you a number before a lender sees your file.
What I cover
Bad-credit and subprime approvals, dealership F&I mechanics, financing after bankruptcy or a consumer proposal, newcomer and self-employed files, APR math and total cost of borrowing, negative equity, credit rebuilding, and your rights under Ontario consumer protection law and OMVIC rules.
